Fantasy Baseball: Pitcher Rankings Article at Rotochamps.com

I'm a semi-regular over at Rotochamps.com, and wanted to point everyone over to take a gander at a pitchers ranking article that I think is extremely well done. Quite a few surprises, but everyone of them accompanied by a justification and explanation.

The article is here.

  • Weren't you one of the ones that mocked me for drafting Felix as high as I did?

Seems at least one "expert" somewhat agrees.

Admittedly I probably could have gotten Felix in the late second round if my draft had been live, even in my Seattle based league, and that would have been a better value.

  • Yup, and I still mock you for drafting him that high.

    First off, it was a H2H league. That's a big no-no.

Second, you drafted him in the top 5 overall, if I remember correctly. The author of that article makes a very definite disclaimer saying that's not the rankings by which you should draft, but by which you should VALUE pitchers.

If I had a time machine, and found out that Julio Franco will come off the bench for 80 HRs this year and hit .450, and could go back and tell my past-self this, where would I draft him? Certainly not in the first round. I'd draft him in the final round - because I know he's not even being valued there by the other owners.

If you know something everyone else does, take that into consideration. But it doesn't mean to draft according to THAT value, it means draft according to PERCEIVED value. If "everyone" considers Player A to be no better than a 12 round pick, but you consider him a 4th round pick, you draft that player in the 11th round, not the 4th.
