Fantasy Baseball: Oliver "Hardy" Perez

Oliver Perez has won 5 of his last 6 decisions, but that will be put on hold for the time being as Mr. Perez decided to kick the clubhouse laundry basket to let off some steam as his team blew his lead the other night. Perez (6-5, 6.16, 1.64) hasn't been doing very well this year, no thanks to some fairly awful run support. However, his recent performances may indicate a return to 2004 form - a return that is currently being camoflauged by his upcoming 15 stint on the DL (due to his laundry basket kicking).

I advise that folks go out and try to trade for Perez, as he seems to somewhat be turning things around. He can be had for a song (offering a lower tier closer might seem like a great deal for both sides), and may provide a solid edge for any struggling fantasy pitching staff.

And don't overlook the promotion of future ace Ian Snell from the AAA Indianapolis Indians this month. He pitched a solid no-hitter earlier this season, and should bolster the Pirates' bullpen (and hopefully hold onto some of Perez's leads).

  • I'm with you on Oliver Perez but most owners are too astute to let him go cheaply. I have tried in two of my leagues and it would appear that last year's stellar season has left an indelible mark. Still, your advice is well-taken -- worth giving a shot.

In a third league, a non-keeper 4 X 4 where stats are IPS, Ks, ERA, WHIP, I landed him earlier in the season straight up for Adrian Beltre.

About Snell -- I have seen no indication that he will be used as a starter. While the no-hitter might loom large in the minds of some, he is being slated for middle relief duty. He would, of course be a nice snag for keeper leagues but there are others ahead of him, if you consider some recent callups, namely Ervin Santana and Hayden Penn.

In a non-keeper league where pitching was scarce, I dropped him in favor of Jerome Williams. I would rather wait and see how the Pirates will use Snell and then react accordingly.

    Keep them coming, Badger.

  • re: Snell

That's just my point. Having another shutdown middle reliever only helps Perez, as his chances of having another lead blown continue to narrow down.

Now if only his offense didn't completely blow, he may have a chance to win 15 games.

  • Sorry about that. Misread your earlier statement.

Snell should stick even after Oliver Perez comes back.

There are some reports suggesting Snell might be getting a spot start this week-end -- something to look forward to.
