Underrated Thirdbasemen

Before the season began, all I read about was the depth at third base. At the top of the lists were the usual suspects - Alex Rodriquez, Adrian Beltre, Aramis Ramirez, Melvin Mora, Hank Blalock, Scott Rolen and Eric Chavez.

Nearly halfway through the season, and three of those players are fairly big disappointments (Beltre, Rolen and Chavez). But there's still huge amounts of depth out there, and from unexpected sources. Sure, someone picked up Troy Glaus in later rounds, and his production is somewhat surprising. But did anyone figure that Morgan Ensberg would be putting up nearly identical numbers? Chone Figgins isn't just a bargain at 2B - he can legitimately be put in the 3B slot and without concerns for your lineup. Also putting up bargain-value numbers:

David Wright: Previously touted as the "next Scott Rolen", has quickly replaced the "next" with "current". Keeper league owners are laughing all the way to the bank with this kid.

Shea Hillenbrand: Not creating dominant numbers (he's slightly behind last year's pace), but is just as consistent as ever.

Chad Tracy: These aren't 10-team league numbers, but is a very useable player in larger formats. 15 HRs, 75 RBIs and a .290 average certainly don't hurt in a big league.

Morgan Ensberg: Mentioned previously, but he has shown power in the past, and he's at an age where this year may not be an aberration. If he's still doing it two weeks past the All Star break, I'll say it's completely legit and he'll do it year in and year out.

Prospects to Watch

Aaron Hill: Batting .333 with a handful of triples, this 23 year old shows some talent. Too bad the rest of his lineup is miserable. Maybe in the next few years we'll see big things out the Canadian team.

Felipe Lopez: Currently ranked 7th on Yahoo's rankings among third basemen. Now, he's much better suited for your 2B or SS slots, but this incredibly mis-managed youngster has Michael Young or Nomar potential. This is a 3B article, but keep him in mind next year as a bargain SS or 2B option.

Andy Marte: I mentioned him in an earlier article this week, but his presence in the Braves lineup bears repeating. This kid is GOOD, and could be up to speed as soon as mid-July.

9 Comments:

  • Problem is that most owners in a semi-sophisticated league of any kind, have already nabbed these players.

Some 3B eligibles to watch, and who may have been flying a little lower under the radar would be:

Antonio Perez, 3B/SS, LAD: check out his minor league numbers:

2004 in AAA ball, had a .296/ .379/ .511 line, smacking 22Hrs, showing good plate discipline with 61 BBs in 476 ABs, while stealing 22 bases -- looks like a very capable multi-category producer. May have been forgotten on account of his recent conversion to 3B. If all others on your list are taken, A Perez is a guy to pick up.

    Also keep an eye on:

Wilson Betemit,, 3B/SS: Marte will be good but not this year. He was not deserving of a promotion and was only hitting .270 when he was called up. Betemit on the other hand, has been hitting very well in a part-time role -- great numbers if you project them as a regular. With Furcal struggling and Marte only getting a taste of the majors, I expect Betemit to take on the majority of playing time afforded by C Jones' injury, while stealing some at-bats from Furcal. Plus, Furcal is likely to be traded by the trading deadline, making Betemit a good guy to stash.

    DARK HORSES:

K Youkilis, 3B, Sox -- has also been taking turns at 1B. Only a matter of time before Mueller gets hurt again.

A Cintron, 3B/SS, Zona has been showing power flashes -- he could pick it up at any time.

EARLY SEASON SLEEPERS WHO HAVE FLOPPED:

No question (and he was one of your favorites, too) -- C Blake is proving that last year was a big fluke.

    Admit it, you liked him.

    A lot.

    But now ...

You don't like him any more.

    ;o)

  • Forgot to mention ... Placido Polanco. Now that he is solidly entrenched in Detroit, he's already showing signs of a huge break-out.

I was able to pick him up in several public Roto leagues -- he might still be out there in some leagues where his stats as a platoon player may have left an indelible imprint on some ...

  • Ahhh, Casey Blake...

Yup, you're absolutely right - I targeted him all over the place. What a flop! But he's shown a few signs of life, but the fact is that we're keeping the life-support machine close by and powered up. I'd grab him in deep leagues where he may have been dropped, just in case he shows a 2nd half resurgence, but I certainly wouldn't put him in the lineup right now.

  • Oh, and great comments on Perez and Betemit - but with their SS eligibility, there's not much reason to play them at 3B.

  • Thanks Badger.

I dumped C Blake in my 14-team keeper league about 3 weeks ago and he's still waiting for me on the wire ...

I have replaced him by A Perez.

I have K Greene at SS, and R Freel at CI ... but no other back-ups for these positions.

I'm keeping an eye on C Blake but having watched him day in and day out since the beginning of the season, he seems more like a one-season wonder to me.

BTW -- in a keeper league, would you trade A Perez and J Rincon for Marte? I see Marte as a stop-gap this year and am adverse to carrying deadweight players for a whole year when they are only useful the following year -- basically, should I make an exception with Marte and go for it?
